Powell River and AreaSunshine Coast BCPowell River is located 142 kilometers to the northwest of Vancouver. The community was founded in 1910 as a result of the paper mill being built at the mouth of the worlds second shortest river. In 1995 the Townsite, still home of the mill today, was designated a National Historic District by the National Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. When the Townsite received this designation, there were only 7 such districts in all of Canada. Many of the original structures and homes still exist for you to see today.
From the Townsite grew the city of today. The population has seen steady growth for the last 7 years. In 2005, they became an official 'city'. Several 'distinct districtsÂ’ make up the city of Powell River, they are4 the Townsite, Cranberry, Wildwood, and Westview. There are several other communities on the fringes as well, to the south is Blackpoint, Lund and the Powell Lake area are to the north. If you are considering purchasing property or relocating to the area, there are may excellent realtors who are more than able to assist you. In the early 1900's the main industries were forestry fishing, and mining. Today the main industries are somewhat different. Tourism, aquaculture, general manufacturing, retirement and recreational opportunities are all rising and have become major economic factors in the city today.
You can get here by BC Ferries from Horsehoe Bay and then a 2nd ferry ride from Earls Cove on the lower Sunshine Coast, or by BC Ferries from Comox on Vancouver Island. There is no direct road access, if travelling by car, the area is only accessible by BC Ferries. There are also flights from YVR Vancouver International Airport daily, daily service to and from Vancouver Island and there is always the option of a private charter.
Accommodations and Bed & Breakfasts are scattered through out the region and it is not difficult to find the perfect place to stay while you are visiting the Powell River area. There are also excellent RV & Campgrounds, some of them are even located on the waterfront for a great camping experience for the whole family. The area is known for its world class diving and if you are a diver or considering taking diving lessons you really must give the area some consideration. In recent years shopping in the area has expanded and continues to do so. There are major big box stores as well as quaint shops and boutiques with local art and craftsmans unique wares.
